Northeast Baptist Hospital Becomes a Texas Cord Blood Collection Site

The Texas Cord Blood Bank (TCBB), a publicly and privately funded non-profit program established to create a public supply of umbilical cord blood, announced in October that it has begun collecting the life-saving resource from Northeast Baptist Hospital. Northeast Baptist is the tenth hospital in Texas, and the fourth one in San Antonio, to collect cord blood for the Texas Cord Blood Bank.

"The program has been a great success at North Central Baptist, and we understand the importance of this service and wanted to make it available to as many of our patients as possible," said Trip Pilgrim, Baptist Health System President/CEO. "We plan to have more San Antonio Baptist Hospitals become part of the Texas Cord Blood Bank. This partnership is critical to providing our community with a leading edge solution to combating a number of diseases. Our patients and families want and deserve to have an opportunity to be a part of that solution."

TCBB, a division of the South Texas Blood and Tissue Center, is the state's first public bank for umbilical cord blood. Although usually discarded after the birth of a healthy baby, umbilical cord blood is rich in blood-making cells that can be used to help patients with a number of conditions. Cord blood cells can be life savers for those who need bone-marrow transplants, (people with lymphoma and leukemias); people with disorders of the blood-making system, such as sickle-cell anemia; severe immune-system disorders, neurological problems and genetic defects affect the blood-making system.

Click Here To Go Back To The E-Newsletter

Bill the Blogger: Posts on Dads and Newborns

Just in time for Father's Day, Baptist Health System has launched a first of its kind on the Baptist website Blog aimed at reaching new dads with information on how to bond with their newborn babies. The Blog is written by "SONS to DADS" program creator, nurse Bill Williams, R.N.

In his first Blog Williams talks about why he started Sons to Dads at Baptist. "I developed the course for expecting fathers to help them be better prepared for their new and wonderful role of a caregiver, not only to the newborn, but to the new mom as well," said Williams. "You can't imagine until you see it for yourself, how these dads are impacted by becoming intimately involved in their newborn baby's life from the moment they are born. The babies respond immediately to dad's touch and care, and moms love the involvement and support they see from their husbands."

Bill's program teaches dads how to bond with their new babies through skin to skin "Kangaroo Care" techniques and helps dads learn how to be more involved in their child's care. Dads who take Bill's course learn all the baby basics they need to care for their son or daughter, from burping to bathing and more. Bill's mission is to show dads the joy they can discover by bonding with their newborn from the moment of birth. Dads who take Bill's course are forever impacted by what they learn.but more importantly.so are their children.

Bill's SONS to DADS course is available to all dads whose babies will be born at Baptist Health System hospitals. Bill decided to create the Blog as a way to reach dads who are more likely to get their information online these days.

Check out Bill's Blog.

Holiday Eating: It's About Enjoyment, Not Guilt

This also means we are in the midst of holiday cookies, cakes, stuffing, sauces, and hams. Trying to eat healthfully can be difficult during this time of year, making some of us feel guilty when we veer from our healthful ways. But should we feel guilty? And should we substitute reduced-fat goodies for traditional holiday fare?

"I guess in principle it's a reasonable idea for people to cook lower-fat during the holidays," says Kelly Brownell, PhD, a Yale University professor of psychology who serves as director of the Yale Center for Eating and Weight Disorders.

"But it's swimming against the tidal wave of the very high-fat way people like to eat at this time of year," he points out. "They feel, rightfully so, that it's a time to treat themselves." But, he comments, attitude really counts.

"If people say, 'this is a time for celebration and I love these foods and I only have them once in a while,' then I don't think it's a problem," he remarks. But if they "feel shame and guilt," they'll feel bad and they won't get to enjoy the food.
Cutting Yourself Some Slack
Mark Hegsted, professor emeritus of nutrition at Harvard University's School of Public Health, has done a great deal of research on the relationship between diet and heart disease. Regarding low-fat cooking, he says, "My inclination is not to take it too seriously at this time of the year. The meals we want to eat have got to be good. If you can find low-fat ones that are satisfying, fine."

Gail Zyla, a registered dietitian, visiting lecturer at the Tufts University School of Nutrition Science and Policy, and coauthor of the popular college text, Personal Nutrition , believes that Christmas belongs in the 20% part of the 80/20 rule.

"Eighty percent of the time you try to do things 'right,'" she explains. "Give yourself a little more room 20% of the time. It allows for the stick-with-it-ness people need" to follow a healthful diet.

Zyla points out the 20% part of the rule helps people refrain from overeating throughout the holiday season.

"A lot of people go hog wild for the entire month of December," she notes. "If people were a little more relaxed about it and a little more forgiving, they wouldn't feel the need to go nuts and then get rigid in January."

The way for people to relax themselves into the 20% fraction of the rule, she says, is to remind themselves that "this isn't the last time that I'm going to be able to eat a cookie, or have some pie, or eat a little gravy." That way, they "don't overdo it because they don't feel they're stockpiling for the whole next year."
Balance Can Be Key
Rather than thinking of lower-fat dishes as things to make instead of the dishes you really love, people should simply look at them as possible opportunities to make new dishes that "are just good for their own sake and on their own merits," notes Jill Melton, MS, RD, former editor-in-chief of Cooking Light magazine.

Melton also points out that no matter what high-fat, high-calorie dishes you make, there's probably going to be some naturally low-fat fare on the table, too. "Fresh sautéed green beans alongside the scalloped potatoes with cheese and cream," as she puts it. In other words, there tends to be at least some balance, even on the most weighty of holiday dinner tables.

Even if there isn't, the experts say, the world isn't going to come to an end. Or as Zyla succinctly puts it, "People should not beat themselves up over Christmas dinner. That's the last thing anyone needs to feel guilty about. Kick back and enjoy."

RESOURCES:
Duke Health.org
http://www.dukehealth.org/

United States Department of Agriculture
Food and Nutrition Information Center
http://healthymeals.nal.usda.gov

Last reviewed October 2007 by Maria Adams, MS, MPH, RD
