When to Call a Chaplain

  • At request of patient, family member, or physician
  • To provide support concerning a new diagnosis
  • To respond to Code Blue/ Code 3
  • To assist families in event of death or imminent death
  • To intervene in crisis situation
  • To provide Ethics Consultation
  • To assist with family distress
  • To assist with grief issues
  • To address staff needs or concerns
  • To assist with request for Catholic Priest or Sacraments
  • To provide spiritual literature at patient request
  • To address specific patient questions around Advance Directives
*PLEASE NOTE: We rely heavily on the assessment of nursing staff especially after office hours. If a situation arises which cannot wait until office hours to address, please feel free to call us. We are glad to assist patients, families, or staff members in need.


How to Reach Us

In-house daily
Monday through Friday (except holidays) from 7 AM to 6:00 PM. You may call the office at (210)297-2752 to speak with one of us. If no one is in the office during business hours, please leave a voice mail message, or for immediate response, contact us through the hospital operator.

After hours and on weekends
After 6pm Monday through Friday: Contact the hospital operator or House Supervisor.
On Saturday and Sunday: (same)

When a patient requests a Catholic Priest

Attempt FIRST to contact the patient's own parish priest.  If they do not have a local priest, and the situation requires immediate response, please contact St. Pius X Catholic Church, at (210)824-0139.  If for some reason, St. Pius is unable to assist, call the chaplain On-call for assistance.

Catholic Services
Eucharistic Ministers provide the sacrament of Holy Communion every Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. We are grateful to St. Pius X Catholic Church for providing the ministry of Holy Communion to our Catholic patients.

Patient's parish arranges the Sacraments of Anointing and Confession. The Pastoral Care staff is glad to help make arrangements for patients who do not live in the San Antonio area or for patients who need emergency assistance.

Staff Care
Staff chaplains are available to meet the needs of staff in ways including the following:

  • Brief Counseling
  • In-service and educational opportunities
  • Stress management/ de-briefing sessions
  • Crisis intervention
  • Ethics consultations

Literature
The Department has a variety of materials available to our patients and staff including:

  • Our Daily Bread - a daily devotional guide
  • Guideposts Magazine - inspirational stories. (We have large print editions available.)
  • Decision Magazine - published by the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association
  • Carenotes - inspirational booklets covering a variety of topics such as: The Grieving Process, Medical Decision Making, Unexpected Death, Loneliness, and many others.
  • New Testament - located in the drawers in every patient room. If one is not available, please contact us so we can replace it. (Spanish New Testaments are available in our office.)
